Ruse

Sunday 14 August, 2011

Arrived in Ruse today after 3-plus hour train trip from Veliko Tarnovo. Pics (including the Danube!) soon.

As this is my last Bulgarian stop before crossing the Danube into Romania, a word about Bulgarian ethnicity. One of the 3 ethnic strands of the official national identity story (along with 1. the Thracians, the people who were here when conquered by the Romans and 2. the Slavs, who gave modern Bulgarians their language) are the Bulgars (or Proto-Bulgarians). The Bulgars are thought to have come from Asia, perhaps Turkic speaking, from as far away as modern Tajikistan.
