I am now in Ohrid, on the shore of Lake Ohrid, close to the borders of Albania and Greece. Lake Ohrid is 34km long and one of Europe’s deepest (300m), shared between Albania and Macedonia.

My private apartment is nice. Same facilities as in Bitola, but only 16 euro per night. The owner is a history professor. He says his salary is 400 euros per month, so the extra cash from the apartments he rents out helps. I was greeted with a complimentary shot of rakia made from the grape vines shading the yard of the house. The towels placed on the bed in the shape of kissing swans was a cute touch. On my first walk in town I went from “port to fort”. There was yet another statue of the saintly brothers (Cyril and Methodius) and a square with a fountain and 900 year old plane tree.
