Salerno

23-28 April, 2011

Salerno seems like a good base to explore the Amalfi coast and Campania region. I am in a dorm at the Ave Gratia Plena, a very old building (former convent). The nearby Duomo cathedral dates from the Normans in 1076 (ten years after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 established the Normans in Britain). The Duomo is supposed to contain the tomb of St Matthew the Evangelist. It’s hard to get my head around how ancient these places are. I visited Amalfi by boat on a day trip and I want to go to Paestum (about one hour by bus). There are four well-preserved Greek temples set in green grassy fields (and the Tomb of the Diver). Seems like a good place for a picnic. I will buy some bread, cheese and fruit and a bottle of wine. The day I went to Amalfi was lovely and sunny, but today is overcast and drizzly (a mournful day at last!)  so I might go tomorrow or Thursday when the weather will hopefully improve.
